Dr. Gurney Guest Speaker Q&A

  • avatar

There are five types of speakers: 1) humorist, 2) motivational, 3) celebrity, 4) free industry expert, and 5) paid industry expert. Let me explain where I fall in the spectrum.

I am a paid industry expert. Free industry experts are salaried employees or use keynotes to sell expensive contracts.

I have excellent large outplacement and recruiting contracts that provide a font of clientwork and also allow me to give the audience cutting-edge career information. Therefore, I am not taking private 1:1 clients and I don't sell at events.

I motivate and educate the audience with leveraged support from my book and online class to ensure attendees can implement the concepts. As an industry speaker, I do add in motivation and humor when it makes sense.  My events typically generate an hour of questions and I remain to network with attendees to answer their questions.

Paid industry experts that are non-celebrities range from $1,000 to $4,000 for a keynote and $4,000 to $10,000 a day for a workshop.

I bill at $100 per hour for nonprofit evening/weekend events and $200 per hour for a for-profit or weekday event.* (travel expense additional). A keynote is 15 hours of total work: preparation, time-in-transit, and attendance.

    Nonprofit Night/Weekend Keynotes are $1,500
    For-Profit/Weekday Keynotes are $3,000

Workshops are negotiable on hours and days needed but are billed on weekday rates.

Let me explain my corporate contracts and how I stay cutting-edge which affects pricing.

I have large contracts that drive clients to me during daytime hours.  As a consultant, if I am not billing and placing then I am not making money. A daytime event requires that I skip new clientwork for the event week. Coaching is time intensive (15-25 hours per client). If I skip a week of clients to attend a daytime event, I transfer that cost to the keynote or workshop.

Clientwork ensures I stay current on career trends which is critical to my books, classes, and keynotes. Therefore there is a difference between day and night/weekend rates.
